We live in a digital world. So, choosing to study information technology is one of the safest education decisions you can make. An IT degree will equip you to become a critical organizational resource in any industry, and the Dominican University IT program will also enable you to develop a marketable industry specialization if you desire.

Throughout your studies, you’ll develop core information technology skills, build in-demand soft skills, and prepare for prominent industry IT certifications. You’ll get plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning by working with the Dominican University IT department, including our Chief Information Officer who’s one of our IT professors, and through at least one internship at a local or national business.

Our motto is Doing Business Right, which means we not only teach you how to drive business success through information technology, we also teach you how to improve the world through IT. Such skills are increasingly important in a world where consumers demand ethical and sustainable business practices. You can choose a concentration in Infrastructure or Application Development.

While we teach most of our classes in-person during the day, we also offer evening classes and online information technology courses. So, if you’ve got other responsibilities, you’ll easily be able to fit your studies into your busy schedule.

Of course, going to a university isn’t just about academics, so we’ve made sure you’ll get the support you need to succeed with your studies while also having heaps of fun along the way. What You’ll Learn

Throughout your IT degree, you’ll learn core ‘hard skills’ like hardware, software, programming, network management and design, and database management. And you’ll get the opportunity to take liberal arts courses that relate to the industry you’d like to specialize in, so you can better understand the businesses you wish to work within. We’ll also help you develop the in-demand ‘soft skills’ that will set you apart from other IT graduates, helping you secure your dream jobs.

You’ll also learn more advanced IT skills when you choose your concentration. We offer concentrations in application development (e.g. for budding app developers) and IT infrastructure (e.g. to equip you to manage IT infrastructure for large corporations).

Course structure

When you enroll in the Dominican University IT degree program, you can choose to complete a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, a Minor in Information Technology or a Certificate in Personal Computers.

For a BS Information Technology, you’ll complete 120 credits consisting of:

60 credits from the liberal arts division
31 core credits (MG 211, MK 114, IX 250, BU 213, AC 111, AC 112, FN 226, MG 310, MG 355, MG 474)
24 IT course credits
Three internship or practicum credits
Two Freshman Seminar credits

For a Minor in Information Technology, you’ll complete 18 credits consisting of:

Units IX 250, IXZ 200
Four other IT courses

We also offer a New-York-State-approved Certificate in Personal Computers, which consists of:

Concentrations

If you choose to undertake a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (you want to major in information technology), you can choose from three concentrations:

Public Health Informatics and Technology (PHIT) – PHIT is a developing field that brings advances in data science to work towards improving public health for all. If you want to improve lives and have a passion for analyzing data and solving puzzles, PHIT is right for you!
Infrastructure — If you want to learn how to develop and support the information technology infrastructure that underpins businesses around the world, this concentration is for you. You’ll study things like help-desk management, technology hardware, network technology, and windows server management.
Application Development — If you want to learn how to build apps, games, or other kinds of software applications, this concentration is for you. You’ll study intermediate and advanced programming, and can choose to study mobile app development, programming for the internet, transact SQL programming, and applied software development.

IT Certification

Three of our units are based on industry technology certifications. If you complete any of the below courses, you’ll be well equipped to take the IT certification exams, which will greatly enhance your CV, and we recommend you do so while you’re a student or soon after you graduate (while all the information is fresh in your mind).

IX 330 is based on the Microsoft Server Certification

IACBE Accreditation
